Plantain pieces are coated with gram flour, spices & deep fried. Raw Banana Bajji (Vazhakkai) is one of the very popular Bajji. It's a very crispy and spicy snack, perfect for tea time ! Bajji is prepared by dipping any sliced vegetable in the besan(gram) flour batter and deep frying it.

Instructions to make Vazhaikai Bajji/ Plantain Bajji:
  1. Peel off the vazhaikai/ plantain skin and cut into round thin slices.
  2. In a bowl, add besan flour, rice flour, idli batter, asafoetida, baking soda, chilli powder and salt. Mix well.
  3. Add required water and mix well. The batter must not be too thick nor too watery. If it's too watery Bajji will absorb more oil.
  4. In a kadai, add oil for deep frying. Once oil gets heat, keep the flame in medium. Dip the vazhaikai/ plantain pieces in the batter and put in oil.
  5. Deep fry till it turns golden brown colour. Take it out and drain them in an absorbent paper.
  6. Now it's ready to serve. Serve with tomato sauce or green coconut chutney.
